These soldiers were of German Descent, coming from the area of Hessen-Cassel, Germany. Thus the name Hessian derived. One such soldier was Johann Daniel Hilgenberg.

Daniel Hilgenberg as he was called was born September 10, 1752 at Rohrenfurth, Hessen-Cassel, Germany. Entering the Hessian Army at the age of 24, Daniel shipped to America to help the British during the American Revolutionary War. A grenadier in Rall's also known as Von Rall's Regiment Company 2, Daniel fought in New York and New Jersey. Captured by Washington's Troops at Trenton, Daniel became a POW one year before being exchanged. After the Battle of Savannah Daniel deserted at Zitterauer's Bridge near Purysburg, South Carolina on April 24, 1779. Other Hessians also left at this time and Daniel may have accompanied one to North Carolina. Some believe Daniel joined the American Forces, but I have found no proof of this thus far.

Daniel settled on <st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">Spraker Road</st1:address></st1:street> near Crockett, Virginia, changed his name to Hildenberg and engaged in linen weaving. He married Barbara Shrader or Shrider in 1787 in Montgomery, Virginia. Daniel and Mary became the parents of nine daughters and four sons, all born in Wythe County, Virginia. Three of these daughters married sons of Jacob Deckert/Deckard of Wythe County, Virginia

In 1819 and right before his death, Daniel changed his name to Hillenberg.
Hillenburg, Hiltonberg, Hilenberg, Heltonberg, Hylenberg, Hylgenberg, and Hiltonberg are just some of the spelling variations used by descendants in the Hilgenberg line .
Upon his death Daniel was buried on his land. John Wampler was appointed guardian of Daniel's children and later married Mary Barbara Shrader Hilgenberg, Daniel's widow. John and Mary were married January 14, 1821. Daniel Hillenberg Jr. purchased Daniel Sr.'s farm from the heirs on October 25, 1834. It later was passed on to Daniel Jr's son Eli Hillenberg. Daniel Jr. son of Johann Daniel Hillenberg/Helgenberg and his sons were Virginia Confederate Soldiers. Daniel Jr.'s son Eli Hillenberg died in 1897 and was buried at Kings Grove Clever Gen. Washington petitioned the Continental Congress to offer land in the colonies to any mercenary soldier who would defect (but not bear arms against the British). It took several attempts, but the plan was finally put into effect. Dave's great-great-grandfather, Daniel Helgenborg (nowHillenburg ) was granted 50 acres in Wythe County, Virginia. The original portion of the farmhouse was built in the 1780's and the land had been in theHillenburg/Kinzer family until just a few years ago, and other Hillenburg relatives have been lucky enough to see & photograph the interiors as well as the landscape. We had to settle for some great exterior photos ... wouldn't you love to relax in this lovely spot? http://www.dnl.fgrv.net/

Hillenburgs in the US for the 1920 Census

FAM #
SURNAME- GIVEN- MID- RELATION- AGE- STATUS- BORN

#105
Hillenburg Lou Head 38 W Kentucky
Hillenburg Pearl Daughter 16 S Arkansas
Hillenburg Earl Son 14 S Missouri
Hillenburg Bessie Daughter 11 S Oklahoma
Hillenburg Willie Son 8 S Arkansas
Hillenburg Hughie Son 5 S Arkansas
Clayton Jesse Son-in-law 25 M Arkansas
Clayton Ethel Daughter 19 M Missouri
Clayton R. CITIZEN

JOHANN DANIEL HILGENBERG, HESSIAN SOLDIER AND WYTHE CO. CITIZEN

My 3Xgreat grandfather Johann Daniel Hilgenberg (called Daniel) was born September 10, 1752 at Rohrenfurth, Hessen-Cassel, Germany to Johann Christian and Anna Catherine (Sinninger) Hilgenberg. His birthplace still stands today.

Entering the Hessian Army at age 24, Daniel shipped to America to help the British during the Revolutionary War. A grenadier in Rall’s Regiment, Company 2, Daniel fought in New York and New Jersey. Captured by Washington’s troops at Trenton, Daniel was a POW one year before being exchanged.

After the Battle of Savannnah, Daniel deserted at Zitterauer’s Bridge, near Purysburgh, South Carolina on April 24, 1779. Other Hessians also left at this time and Daniel may have accompanied one to North Carolina. Some believe Daniel joined the American forces.

After the war, Daniel settled on Spraker Road near Crockett, Virginia, changed his name to Hildenberg and engaged in linen weaving. He married Mary Barbara Shrader, born in 1770, the daughter of John Shrader and sister to Philip, Peter, and Christian Shrader. Daniel and Barbara Hildenberg’s four sons and nine daughters were born in Wythe County, Virginia.

Daniel and Barbara’s daughters Christina, Sally, and Catherine married Michael, Jacob, Jr., and John Deckard, sons of Jacob Deckard, Sr. of Wythe County. A fourth Deckard brother, William, married Elizabeth Emeline, a niece of the three daughters and daughter of Anna (Kinser) and John Lewis Hildenberg. Sally, born 1798 near Crockett, Virginia, and Jacob Deckard, Jr., my great great grandparents, were married May 8, 1817 in Wytheville.

Before Daniel’s death in June 1819, his name changed to Hillenberg (some use Hillenburg). Daniel was buried on his land. John Wampler was appointed guardian of Daniel’s children and married Daniel’s widow, Barbara, October 25, 1821.

Daniel Hillenberg, Jr. (Sally’s brother) purchased Daniel, Sr.’s farm from the heirs on October 25, 1834. Daniel, Jr. and his sons were Virginia Confederate soldiers. The farm passed to Daniel, Jr.’s son Eli Hillenberg, who in 1897 was buried at King’s Grove Methodist Cemetery.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hillenburg.blogspot.com/2008/03/johann-daniel-hilgenberg-hessian.html' title='JOHANN DANIEL HILGENBERG, HESSIAN SOLDIER AND WYTHE CO. Many Hessians deserted in this period when it was clear the British were not going to honor the terms of their contract and return them to Germany as scheduled.

Daniel settled near Wythesville, Virginia his name was slowly changed to Hillenburg. The area was still rough and some of his sons married Cherokee girls.

In 1835, the US Government rounded up most of the Cherokees, including some of the Hillenburgs and forced them on the “Trail of Tears” in which they walked 2000 kilometers to Oklahoma where they remain. Naturally this caused considerable resentment as families were split up at bayonet point.

Some family moved to southern Indiana in 1840s-1850s. Still angry, several Hillenburgs fought for the Confederacy but a couple fought for the Union. Thus it happened that a Confederate Hillenburg fought a Union Hillenburg. This Southerner is said to have been visiting his brother in hospital only to meet a
captured and very poorly fed Indiana cousin whom he brought food to whenever he could.

After the war most Hillenburgs moved to Dutch Ridge in southern Indiana and remained. That’s were I grew up and the family had established deep roots there. Some remain in Wytheville but the families lost touch about 1930 as the cousins who knew each other died out. My grandfather made trips to Oklahoma in the 1920s and 30s to visit his Cherokee relatives and the family maintains it’s Indian link.

Samuel W Hillenburg, father of Daniel Hillenburg

My Hessian ancestor is Daniel Hillenburg (Heldenburg and many other spellings), today Hillenburg. I have done the entire genealogy form the medieval period in Europe and know exactly what happened to the line. It appears to me that we are all descended from the same Hessian soldier who was captured at Trenton by Washington on Christmas Day when he crossed the Delaware. This soldier was given 50 acres in Virginia in exchange for not returning to the fight. He married a woman from Virginia and had a son who he gave the farm to. This son had more than one boy of one of the sons inherited the property and the other moved to Indiana. I haven’t looked at the records for 10 years but that is the gist of it. The property in Virginia is still owned by the descendants of the grandson’s wife. My dad has met them and they are aware of it originally being owned by the Hillenburg clan. My dad is descended from the son who stayed in Virginia. My dad had a brother who had two sons (one of whom is the creator of SpongeBob) and I am one of six kids. We are now spread all over the country and there are no longer any Hillenburgs in Virginia. My twin sister teaches at NIU and I noticed there is a Hillenburg as a student there. Anyway I hope I filled in some family history for you. My siblings are Mark (VT), David (MD), Lisa (MD), John (DE), and Kim (IL). My two cousins live in CA. The only boy in our line that can carry on the Hillenburg name is my cousin Stephen’s son. My two brothers that have children have daughters.

<span style="font-size: 12pt;
