Grenadier Daniel Hilgenberg of Colonel Ralls Regiment, of the Hessian German Army (6,7) began a family line in America with surnames spelled “Hillenberg” and Hillenburg”. was born September 10, 1752, in Hesse-Cassel Roehrenfurth Germany to Johann Christian and Anna Sinninger Hilgenberg.

His Regiment was among others that were "rented" by the British and sent to America to fight the Americans during the Revolutionary war. On August 15, 1776 they “sailed into the harbor near Stanton Island” New York (8).

He and 895 other Hessians were captured on Christmas Eve 1776 at Trenton New Jersey after Washington’s famous Potomac River crossing (6,7). This small but decisive battle was the turning point of the Revolutionary war; it galvanized support for the colonial effort. Daniel and the other Hessians spent over one year as Washington's prisoners before being reunited with the British in the fall of 1778 through a prisoner exchange (8).

Washington had ordered his men to treat prisoners with “utmost humanity,”(1) so that they would become “fraught with a love of liberty and property."(2) This kindness and a promise of “50 Acres of unappropriated lands” (3,4) caused many of them, including Daniel, to desert the British after the exchange (I cannot verify that Daniel was given any land). This was Washington’s plan. He changed them from being invaders to settlers, neighbors and citizens.

Daniel deserted the British in April of 1779 (4,6), and in 1780, he purchased and created a homestead on property that now has an address of 951 Spraker Road Crockett Wythe County Virginia 24323 (10).

Daniel came to America named Daniel Hilgenberg (6), the Trenton prisoner list also calls him Daniel Hilgenberg (5), and he changed his name to Daniel Hillenberg just before his death in June 19 1819. Many of his children changed the spelling to "Hillenburg".

He and Mary Barbara Shrader married on March 25, 1787 and they are the parents of 13 children. Among them is Crisley Hillenburg b.1810 d. 1902, who is the father of Andrew Jackson Hillenburg (Union Civil War Vet.) b. 1844 d. 1907, who is the father of George Washington Hillenburg b. 1871 d. 1958, who is the father of Marshal Hillenburg b. 1905 d. 1965, who is the father of my father Willard Hillenburg (WW2 Vet).

I have visited Daniel’s homesite twice. The original log house and hand hewn timber frame barn still stands (10). So there you have it! The Hillenburg link to what some call the most pivotal point in American History.

Clever Gen. Washington petitioned the Continental Congress to offer land in the colonies to any mercenary soldier who would defect (but not bear arms against the British). It took several attempts, but the plan was finally put into effect. Dave's great-great-grandfather, Daniel Helgenborg (nowHillenburg ) was granted 50 acres in Wythe County, Virginia. The original portion of the farmhouse was built in the 1780's and the land had been in theHillenburg/Kinzer family until just a few years ago, and other Hillenburg relatives have been lucky enough to see & photograph the interiors as well as the landscape. We had to settle for some great exterior photos ... wouldn't you love to relax in this lovely spot? http://www.dnl.fgrv.net/
Hillenbloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05289768599833438518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35278104.post-63045255788194280722008-03-01T19:47:00.001-08:002008-03-01T19:56:36.508-08:00Hillenburgs in the US for the 1920 CensusFAM #
SURNAME- GIVEN- MID- RELATION- AGE- STATUS- BORN

#105
Hillenburg Lou Head 38 W Kentucky
Hillenburg Pearl Daughter 16 S Arkansas
Hillenburg Earl Son 14 S Missouri
Hillenburg Bessie Daughter 11 S Oklahoma
Hillenburg Willie Son 8 S Arkansas
Hillenburg Hughie Son 5 S Arkansas
Clayton Jesse Son-in-law 25 M Arkansas
Clayton Ethel Daughter 19 M Missouri
Clayton R. CITIZEN
JOHANN DANIEL HILGENBERG, HESSIAN SOLDIER AND WYTHE CO. CITIZEN

My 3Xgreat grandfather Johann Daniel Hilgenberg (called Daniel) was born September 10, 1752 at Rohrenfurth, Hessen-Cassel, Germany to Johann Christian and Anna Catherine (Sinninger) Hilgenberg. His birthplace still stands today.

Entering the Hessian Army at age 24, Daniel shipped to America to help the British during the Revolutionary War. A grenadier in Rall’s Regiment, Company 2, Daniel fought in New York and New Jersey. Captured by Washington’s troops at Trenton, Daniel was a POW one year before being exchanged.

After the Battle of Savannnah, Daniel deserted at Zitterauer’s Bridge, near Purysburgh, South Carolina on April 24, 1779. Other Hessians also left at this time and Daniel may have accompanied one to North Carolina. Some believe Daniel joined the American forces.

After the war, Daniel settled on Spraker Road near Crockett, Virginia, changed his name to Hildenberg and engaged in linen weaving. He married Mary Barbara Shrader, born in 1770, the daughter of John Shrader and sister to Philip, Peter, and Christian Shrader. Daniel and Barbara Hildenberg’s four sons and nine daughters were born in Wythe County, Virginia.

Daniel and Barbara’s daughters Christina, Sally, and Catherine married Michael, Jacob, Jr., and John Deckard, sons of Jacob Deckard, Sr. of Wythe County. A fourth Deckard brother, William, married Elizabeth Emeline, a niece of the three daughters and daughter of Anna (Kinser) and John Lewis Hildenberg. Sally, born 1798 near Crockett, Virginia, and Jacob Deckard, Jr., my great great grandparents, were married May 8, 1817 in Wytheville.

Before Daniel’s death in June 1819, his name changed to Hillenberg (some use Hillenburg). Daniel was buried on his land. John Wampler was appointed guardian of Daniel’s children and married Daniel’s widow, Barbara, October 25, 1821.

Daniel Hillenberg, Jr. (Sally’s brother) purchased Daniel, Sr.’s farm from the heirs on October 25, 1834. Daniel, Jr. and his sons were Virginia Confederate soldiers. I believe his brother went to Russia. Johannes and one brother had fought for several years as Hessian Grenadiers. I believe it was the brother who went to Russia.

Daniel Hilgenberg came to the USA as a Hessian soldier in 1774-5 and was captured at the Battle of Trenton. He was repatriated a few months later but switched sides in 1779 and fought in the Revolutionary Army for several years. Many Hessians deserted in this period when it was clear the British were not going to honor the terms of their contract and return them to Germany as scheduled.

Daniel settled near Wythesville, Virginia his name was slowly changed to Hillenburg. The area was still rough and some of his sons married Cherokee girls.

In 1835, the US Government rounded up most of the Cherokees, including some of the Hillenburgs and forced them on the “Trail of Tears” in which they walked 2000 kilometers to Oklahoma where they remain. Naturally this caused considerable resentment as families were split up at bayonet point.

Some family moved to southern Indiana in 1840s-1850s. Still angry, several Hillenburgs fought for the Confederacy but a couple fought for the Union. Thus it happened that a Confederate Hillenburg fought a Union Hillenburg. This Southerner is said to have been visiting his brother in hospital only to meet a
captured and very poorly fed Indiana cousin whom he brought food to whenever he could.

After the war most Hillenburgs moved to Dutch Ridge in southern Indiana and remained. That’s were I grew up and the family had established deep roots there. Some remain in Wytheville but the families lost touch about 1930 as the cousins who knew each other died out. My grandfather made trips to Oklahoma in the 1920s and 30s to visit his Cherokee relatives and the family maintains it’s Indian link.

Samuel W Hillenburg, father of Daniel Hillenburg

Hillenbloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05289768599833438518noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35278104.post-47152149556774870592008-03-01T19:17:00.000-08:002008-03-10T14:11:35.421-07:00
My Hessian ancestor is Daniel Hillenburg (Heldenburg and many other spellings), today Hillenburg.
